An applicant tracking system (ATS) is a system that enables recruiters to track candidates from the moment they apply for a job, through the hiring process, and on to employment.

What does an ATS do?

An ATS enables the collection and organization of information relevant to the hiring process–such as resumes, interview notes, and assignments–and organizes candidates based on attributes such as experience and skill set.

Most companies who are hiring use a software package to help with tracking applicants through the hiring process. Many advanced ATSs enable users to track all communication between candidates, recruiters, and hiring managers.|
